Mount Kanchenjunga Expedition – 8586m – with Himalayan Alpine Adventure Trek & Expedition
Kanchenjunga is situated at the height of 8586m. Being the third highest mountain in the world and second highest in Nepal, Kanchenjunga is an excellent expedition for adventure lovers. Kanchenjunga was first scaled by the British in 1956.
Situated on the Nepal-Sikkim border, the Kanchenjunga area is rich in wildlife including Musk Deer, the infamous Yeti and Blue Sheep. The region is protected by the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project run by World Wildlife Fund in association with the Nepal Government. It is also home to Red Panda and other snow animals, plants and birds.
Kanchenjunga consists of five summits and that’s why it is also called Five Treasures of Snows. Due to its toughness and technicality, the Kanchenjunga expedition is popular among adventure lovers and climbers alike. Trekking here is famous the world over.
In fact, Kanchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world until 1852, but the calculations made by the British Great Trigonometric Survey in 1849 came to the conclusion that Mount Everest (known as XV Peak at the time) was the highest and Kanchenjunga was the third highest peak. Three of the five peaks – The Main, The Central and The South – lie on the Nepal-Sikkim border, while other two peaks lie completely in the Taplejung district of Nepal. The west summit is also known as Yalung Peak; at an altitude of 8420m, it qualifies as a separate summit according to some mountaineers. Climbing the north face of Kanchenjunga is considered to be safest but not the easiest.

The Climbing Route
The access trek from Suketar to the Base Camp is interesting for its remoteness, the culture of the area and very rare flora (endemic to this region) with 30 varieties of rhododendron and 69 varieties of orchid. The Kanchenjunga Expedition takes the north face route, beginning from a charming base camp in meadows at 5,100m. The first challenge is to fix lines up 900m of intricate mixed climbing on the North Col. This provides the most challenging climbing of the expedition. Having created a lifeline to and from the North Col, you can begin the long process of establishing three camps up the long and complicated North Ridge. Using Sherpa support and oxygen, you move at a systematically slow velocity higher and higher up the mountain. This is a deeply satisfying climb for expert climbers.

Kanchenjunga Expedition Base Camp Services
Himalayan Alpine Adventure Trek & Expedition provides very professional, supportive and friendly mountaineering logistic services from Kathmandu to the ABC as well as during the climb. Our objective is to ensure a good quality, supportive, safe, friendly, stress free and comprehensive service to maximize summit opportunity.
We provide a comprehensive service organizing all necessary permits, climbing documentation, travel logistics including airfare and ground transportation, porters, and other individual services required by clients. On the track of the ABC we provide all required accommodation and food.
At the base camp our cook and helpers will prepare and serve three delicious, freshly cooked and plentiful meals a day and will ensure that hot and cold drinks are available 24hrs a day.
At the base camp we provide spacious, expedition-quality, personal tents for all our clients both with full board or base camp service only.
At the base camp we also provide a dining tent, kitchen tent, toilet facilities, portable shower facilities and tent accommodation for our staff. We also have comprehensive First aid kits available to our clients.
At the base camp we provide access to communication including satellite phone and internet access, and a solar panel to charge your camera battery.

Mt Kanchenjunga Expedition Full Board Service
For full board clients we provide a personal tent and food, which will be prepared in high camp by their climbing Sherpa. We provide a UHF/ VHF hand-held radio on the mountains to maintain communication between ABC and high camp.
Full board with us means the provision of a personal climbing Sherpa / guide for each individual climber, who will help the client to reach the summit. The personal climbing Sherpa will set up camp 1, camp 2, camp 3 and the last camp, and provide anything else required such as and including food, fuel and oxygen and will guide and assist the client on the summit day. There are no commercial expeditions on Kanchenjunga so your climbing Sherpa in cooperation with other clients’ climbing Sherpa will set up fixed rope to the North Col.

Approach to ABC
There are two base camps to climb Mt Kanchenjunga: Kanchenjunga North Base Camp on Kanchenjunga glacier and South Base Camp on Yalung glacier. The access to both base camps is from Suketar (2,400m), the town with the closest airport to the mountain with flights to/from Kathmandu. Suketar is also the last town accessible from Kathmandu by road. The route from the North Base Camp via the North Col is the normal route, as it is the safest route with the fewest dangers.
Kanchenjunga is the most remote of all 8000m peaks in Nepal, and the trek to the North Base Camp from Suketar takes about 11 days along the Ghunsa Khola Valley. It is an 80km long gradual hike from 900m to 5100m, although the first day is a long downhill of 1500m, which has to be climbed on the return.
